Abstract

This talk attempts to show how neofundamentalism is rooted in a network of associations and movements that have operated for years, including the supposedly leftist governmental coalition. Exploring the many faces of pro-life movements in Italy we will understand how these movements are negatively affecting access to safe and free abortion. The talk will explain how the legal institution of conscientious objection by the medical staff to the techniques of voluntary interruption of pregnancy became over the years the source of two types of discrimination: one based on sex that impacts on women and people who intend to have an abortion, denying their right to health; the other that impacts on medical and health personnel discriminated as non-objector negatively affecting the workers’ rights. Lastly, the talk intends to demonstrate how and why different social actors, such as feminist movements and European governance, converge today in affirming that to ensure full access to abortion’s techniques it is necessary to remove the abuse of conscientious objection, thus contrasting neofundamentalism's culture and politics.
