High school students with a keen interest in scientific research will have an opportunity to learn the latest developments in Particle Physics and be a part of particle physics experiments and analysis using real CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) data during the International Masterclasses workshops at the Özyeğin University Çekmeköy Campus on March 20.

Workshops will be held concurrently with the rest of the world, providing participants with the opportunity to participate in an international video conference to discuss and share their experience with other participants from all around the world. Workshops will also give participants the chance to ask their questions directly to CERN scientists. The first workshop will take place on March 20 and the second workshop will be held on April 03 in Özyeğin University classes and laboratories.

Participants will come from the most renowned high schools. Students will learn the interactions between quarks and leptons, the fundamental constituents of matter. Later, students will discover how these particles are observed by particle accelerators and detectors and how these observations are transformed into meaningful information.

Students will take classes from renowned faculty members who worked not only at CERN but also at the world’s most prestigious research centers. Students will then, in teams of three or four, examine on a computer a real dataset from the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, one of the four major experiments conducted at CERN.

Students will finally record their findings in an online table to later share and discuss them with fellow Masterclass participants from all around the world in an international video conference. At the end of the day, students will contact CERN for the international video conference and will have the opportunity to see and discuss the combined results.
