Between Terror and Democracy: An Analysis of Voter Behavior in Turkey’s 2023 Elections

Join us for a talk on the article "Between Terror and Democracy: An Analysis of Voter Behavior in Turkey’s 2023 Elections". In this project, Dr. Öztürk and his collegue, Dr. Melis Laebens, analyse the voter behaviour in Turkey’s 2023 elections, relying on a national survey they conducted shortly after the 2023 election period and an online survey conducted before the election. Erdogan managed to secure victory in the elections despite widespread popular dissatisfaction with the management of the economy and migration. Their results suggest that “democracy” and “terror” were two issues that shaped voter behavior in the elections. Building on this, they analyse the support for democracy among Turkish voters and its relationship with the reactions to democratic violations.
